High School for Girls is a grammar school for 1220 girls aged
between 11 and 19 years. Opened in May 1938 and standing in
22 acres of beautiful grounds on the edge of Nonsuch Park,
we aim to provide a caring, happy and stimulating environment
in which pupils may attain the highest levels of academic
and personal achievement which their abilities will allow.
On entry, all pupils follow the national curriculum including two
foreign language (German, French, Latin or Spanish). The range of
subjects taken for GCSE
is broadened by the opportunity to continue with a second
language, to study the separate sciences and to choose an
appropriate Technology course. Initially, pupils are taught
in forms, with smaller groups for practical subjects. Later,
setting allows for the different rates of progress of individual
pupils.
The
majority of pupils continue their studies in the large Sixth
Form for which external candidates may apply. Courses may
be chosen from 27 subjects. Core studies and seminar work
lead to an additional A level in Critical Thinking. Candidates
are prepared for Oxbridge entry where appropriate, and most
students proceed to higher education or professional training.
A comprehensive tutorial programme including careers and health
education supports the curriculum for all pupils, who are
encouraged to assume responsibility for their studies through
regular homework and negotiated target setting.
Emphasis is placed on self-discipline and consideration for
other people. With the exception of the Sixth Form, all pupils
wear school uniform.
Artistic, dramatic, musical and sporting talents are fostered.
Many pupils have instrumental lessons; choirs and orchestras
flourish together with many clubs and societies. Membership
of a range of sports teams is encouraged. A David Lloyd Sports
and Leisure Club is situated within the grounds and the school
benefits from exclusive use of some of the facilities. All
opportunities are taken for visits in this country and abroad
to widen further the educational experience.
The School is fortunate in having excellent well-resourced
accommodation for all subject areas. An excellent cafeteria,
used by most pupils at mid-morning break and at lunch time,
is run by Harrisons Catering who are committed to a policy
of Healthy Eating. Petit Enfants, a private nursery, operates
on the School site.
Nonsuch has close links with the local community and enjoys
considerable support from its thriving Parent Teacher and
Friends Association as well as from the Nonsuch Old Girls'
Association.
In September 2004, Nonsuch was designated a Specialist Science
School and this has allowed us to enhance the provision for science
education both at Nonsuch and for our partner schools. Science
Specialist designation has enabled us to provide the Science Department
with state-of-the-art technology including wireless networking,
interactive whiteboards and a host of interactive science software
which together, underpin the traditional practical side of science education at Nonsuch.
The School's high academic achievement has been recognised by an Achievement
Award from the DfEE in three subsequent years and in 2008, we were delighted
to be identified as a High Performing Specialist School.
