SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
Mrs N
Holmes Head of Physical Education
The department offered a wide range of extra-curricular activities this
year and a substantial number of pupils took the opportunity to participate
at lunchtimes, after school and at weekends. Senior students helped younger
pupils at dance club to choreograph dances for the dance show Musicality.
At the Borough Cross-Country Championships in October, Nonsuch won the
junior and senior events and was runner-up in the overall competition.
Harriet Hart in year 12 won the senior individual event. The netball teams
performed well with all teams reaching the semi-final stage of the Borough
tournament. The Year 7 and 8 teams went on to become Borough Champions
and the Year 8 team also won the League. The Year 10 and 11 teams both
finished as the runners-up in the League. The hockey teams played several
friendly fixtures on the synthetic pitch and started Early Bird practices
at 8am, which were well attended. Fixtures also took place in tennis,
athletics and rounders in the summer. Teams competed at Surrey competitions
in swimming, netball, table tennis and gymnastics. The under-13 gymnastics
team won the gold medal at the Surrey schools floor and vault championships,
which was an excellent achievement.

After nine months of training, a total of 51 students from years 9 &
10 were selected to ball girl at the Stella Artois Tennis Tournament.
The ATP Supervisor wrote in his tournament evaluation that he had never
seen better ball girls anywhere at any time and that they continue to
be a highlight of the tournament. The recognition of the girls performance
at a prestigious international event makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Some individual pupils have achieved outstanding success. Melanie South
improved her senior world tennis ranking to 421 and played for Great Britain.
Aimee Evans and Rhia Vassallo were selected for the British Korfball team.
Two students were selected to join the British Cycling Talent Team after
taking part in testing at school. This was an excellent achievement as
several thousand students were tested and only 16 made it through to the
final squad.

In school, the Inter-house tournaments took place. Mercury won the overall
trophy for the first time. The atmosphere at the tournaments was friendly
and encouraging and the girls displayed respect for their opposition both
when winning and losing. The continued emphasis at these events is on
participation with the rules stating that all pupils take part in at least
one match at each activity. The champions are therefore the most consistent
performers throughout the form and not just a few girls.
We were pleased to welcome back two members of the British Olympic Foundation,
Gill Horgan a nutritionist and Suki Brownsdon a four time Olympic swimmer
who visited the A Level students at school in April as part of the Beacon
initiative. They talked to the group about nutrition, elite performance,
energy systems and training, and their visit in Olympic year was particularly
relevant. Gill was due to depart to the British holding camp in Cyprus
in the summer to help the Olympic team prepare. We were pleased to welcome
to this event P.E. students from Sutton Grammar, Greenshaw, Parsons Mead
and St.Philomenas. Year 12 students also visited the University
of Westminster to undertake fitness tests on specialised equipment in
their Exercise Physiology Laboratory.
