IN-SERVICE TRAINING 2003/2004

Mrs E K Nichols – Deputy Headmistress
This year has been very full with staff undertaking a wide variety of courses and participating in many on-site activities. A major focus in the latter part of the year was on ICT and training in the effective use in the classroom of interactive whiteboards. These would be installed as part of Specialist Science Status.
Observation Week during which all staff were seen and also observed another colleague was again successful as teachers watched colleagues in other departments and shared expertise. Mr Sides gave feedback on successful teaching and learning strategies.
Departmental development planning and general administrative tasks took up the final and first INSET days respectively. Twilight sessions were organised by Mrs Hillyard, on KS3 Literacy and the use of plenaries. Numeracy training was led by Ms Simmons and a session on report writing took place during a staff meeting.

The examination boards continue to expect a large number of compulsory moderation meetings. The feedback on AS and AL examinations usefully informs planning for the subsequent year.
Two members of the Leadership team undertook NPQH training; one has successfully completed the qualification, now mandatory for Headship and the other is in the final stage.
The NQT induction programme was successfully completed by new members of staff. This year Mr Sides has led several sessions focussing on classroom management and teaching techniques. We were also pleased to welcome students on teaching practice and, for day visits, a number of graduates contemplating teaching as a career. Once again staff, who were taking on new responsibilities, as Head of Year, Head of Department or Teacher Governor, were able to attend training relevant to their new role.
The whole of the sixth form team undertook training on study skills and were able to attend the new Induction Course for sixth formers in September, led by Ms Pomeroy and her Heads of Year: Mrs Tottey and Mrs Forkan.
