SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS Mrs N Holmes – Head of Physical Education The school was re-awarded Sportsmark status in 2002. The department offered a wide range of extra-curricular activities this year and a substantial number of pupils took the opportunity to participate at lunchtimes, after school and at weekends. Senior students helped younger pupils at dance club to choreograph dances for their show, which was called ‘Dances of our Time’. A number of girls enjoyed going to Sutton and Epsom rugby club after school to take part in training following a successful community link. Judo club continued to thrive in all age groups. At the Borough Cross-Country Championships in October, Nonsuch won the overall team event for the second consecutive year and Harriet Hart in year 11 won the senior individual event. All the netball teams reached at least the semi-final stage of the Borough League and the year 7 netball team went on to win the finals and also the Borough Tournament, which was pleasing. The year 9 and 10 teams both finished as the runners-up. The hockey teams played several friendly fixtures on the synthetic pitch including some under floodlights in December, which was a new experience. Fixtures also took place in tennis and rounders in the summer. Teams competed in swimming, table tennis and Surrey gymnastics competitions. The under 13 gymnastics team won the silver medal at the Surrey schools floor and vault championships, an excellent achievement. The swimming squad won the Robertson Shield for the relay at the London Borough of Sutton Gala in June. 53 students from years 9 & 10 were selected to ball girl at the Stella Artois Tennis Tournament having trained for nine months. The ATP supervisor wrote in his tournament evaluation that ‘the ball girls were outstanding and that their training, discipline and commitment to the tournament were of the highest standard’. It is certainly pleasing to be complimented on the world stage. Some individual pupils have achieved outstanding success. Melanie South improved her senior world tennis ranking and played for Great Britain. Aimee Evans and Rhia Vassallo were selected for the British Korfball team. Laura Sutton gained British records in power lifting and then won the British U.18 championships. Sophie Baccolini represented England in 10 pin bowling. In school, the Inter-house tournaments took place. Pluto won the overall trophy and Jupiter won the year 11 award. The girls took part with great enthusiasm and displayed their house colours with pride. The atmosphere at the tournaments was friendly and encouraging and the girls displayed respect for their opposition both when winning and losing. The emphasis at these events is on participation with the rules stating that all pupils take part in at least one match at each activity. The champions are therefore the most consistent performers throughout the form and not just from a core elite. Two members of the British Olympic Foun3dation, Gill Horgan a nutritionist and Suki Brownsdon a four time Olympic swimmer, visited the A Level students at school in March as part of the Beacon initiative; they talked to the group about nutrition, elite performance, energy systems and training. We were pleased to welcome Glenthorne, Wallington and St.Philomena’s P.E. students to this event. Year 12 students also visited the University of Westminster to undertake fitness tests on specialised equipment in their Exercise Physiology Laboratory. The students are continuing to enjoy the benefits of the new facilities.
