NONSUCH HIGH SCHOOL for GIRLS
GOVERNORS REPORT 2002-2003

PREMISES COMMITTEE

Chair 2002/2003 – Mr Cliff Haynes

The Premises Committee considers all matters relating to the buildings and grounds and is responsible for recommending repairs, improvements and developments to the Governing Body. The committee held five meetings during the academic year and members of the committee visited the school on numerous other occasions.

The last year has seen progress on a number of improvement projects throughout the school and the full use of the new facilities made available to the school as a result of the David Lloyd development.

Replacement of Windows and Gutters

During the Easter and Summer Holidays work was carried out to replace the old and rotted timber windows to the front and side of the school with modern double glazed units. In order to preserve the appearance of the school great care was taken to ensure that these replacement windows were as far as possible similar in appearance to the original timber windows.  The window renewal was followed by replacement of the gutters to the front of the school with modern seamless gutters which are, again, similar in appearance to the original guttering.  Both projects were funded by government capital grants.

Refurbishment of the Geography Department

During the Summer Holiday refurbishment works have been completed to the Geography classrooms, the work included complete redecoration, new suspended ceilings, new carpeted floor coverings and furniture. The refurbishment was made possible following the roofing repairs completed last year and has greatly improved the learning environment in these classrooms.

Refurbishment of the Physics Laboratories

Again during the Summer Holiday, two of the ground floor physics laboratories were completely refurbished. These works included creation of a new larger Preparation Room between the laboratories and the installation of new suspended ceilings, floor coverings and furniture.  Gas and water services were introduced to the service pods for the first time and this has facilitated greater flexibility within the curriculum through the ability to use the rooms for teaching across the three science disciplines.

General Items

During the summer holiday, the opportunity was taken to redecorate the main entrance hall and staircase to improve the immediate impression of the school lobby. The lighting in the main school hall was also replaced and this will improve the appearance and use of the hall during activities and quiz nights!

In conclusion, the Premises Committee is very pleased with the progress that has been made with improving the learning environment within the school during the last year.
