NONSUCH HIGH SCHOOL for GIRLS
GOVERNORS REPORT 2002-2003

PERSONNEL COMMITTEE

Chair 2002/2003 – Mrs Denise Rooke

The Personnel Committee considers all staffing issues and ensures that the Governing Body meets its obligations within current employment legislation as a responsible employer.

The teaching and support staff structures are reviewed annually to ensure both effective delivery of the curriculum and support services within the constraints of the annual budget.

A key responsibility of the Committee is to ensure that the school’s various Policy Notes relating to staffing and employment issues are regularly reviewed and consistent with current legislation.  During the year, Policy Notes covering a range of issues from Absence to Racial Equality were reviewed and a new Policy on Flexible Working was approved in response to newly introduced government legislation.

In February, the committee received a presentation from Mr Sides on changes made to the school’s Performance Management Policy as part of a review of the policy and its application across the school.  A pro-forma detailing training needs has been developed to ensure these are incorporated into the In-Service Training programme.  The Leadership Team, with the co-operation of staff, has invested a significant amount of time in ensuring the success of the Performance Management programme with the aim of improving teaching and, ultimately, raising standards.

In another important development, the Committee considered the government’s “Tackling Workload” initiative, which identifies 25 administrative tasks that should not routinely be undertaken by teachers.  The initiative has been considered by both teaching and support staff and it is pleasing to note that many of the identified tasks are already undertaken by support staff at Nonsuch.  Further progress has been made with the introduction of computerised registration and the Leadership Team is currently considering ways of addressing the few remaining tasks.

With such an important asset as its highly qualified subject specialists, Nonsuch continues to provide the right balance of staff for its students.  In order to maintain this, a high priority is given to staff recruitment and retention and we continue to strive towards maintaining the best possible pupil/staff ratio.   The Committee also monitors the working environment and Health & Safety in the workplace issues.
