IN-SERVICE TRAINING 2002/2003 Mrs E K Nichols – Deputy Headmistress This year has again involved most staff undertaking a wide variety of training courses and participating in many on site activities. The INSET days covered a number of initiatives: the development of Performance Management; the work to be undertaken on Citizenship and the cross-curricular literacy strategy. Numeracy and the database of pupil achievement were also covered. Departmental Development Planning and general administrative tasks took up the two other INSET days. In this year’s Observation Week all staff were seen and also observed another colleague from a different discipline. We have made use of a large number of INSET providers and in particular have benefited from Oxford admission tutors’ advice. The examination boards provide a large number of compulsory moderation meetings and also courses with examiners - feedback on coursework marking has been particularly useful. Staff joining the school in September 2002 and those promoted during the year have undertaken appropriate training to assist them in their new responsibilities. L B Sutton KS3 training for Science and ICT has been undertaken by a number of staff. Following on from NOF training, several staff have attended further ICT training for example on the use of interactive whiteboards in the classroom. There have also been training sessions relating to the new specifications at GCSE. INSET provided through the Beacon programme has been offered to Nonsuch staff and colleagues across the borough in English, Maths, Music and PE. This year with the appointment of NQTs from 1 July, some INSET has been arranged prior to their taking a timetable commitment in September. Several staff have also attended pastoral courses. Where PGCE trainees are allocated to departments, staff mentors have undertaken additional training provided by SWELTEC and King’s College, London. As a designated Open School Nonsuch departments have hosted a number of visits from graduates hoping to enter teaching and one member of staff gained QTS recognition during the summer term. Training relevant to their roles has also been undertaken by the technicians, office and canteen staff. I should like to acknowledge the work of all colleagues who have so successfully led whole staff INSET this year.
