Duke
of Edinburgh's Award
As
part of the extra curricular timetable, at Nonsuch we offer
the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme to all pupils.
The
Bronze Award is offered to thirty students in Year 9. The
award involves a programme of activities undertaken during
free or personal time.
Students will:
Learn to appreciate the needs of the community.
Learn a new skill or improve an existing one.
Undertake more physical activity.
Prepare for and particiapte in a 2 / 3 day expedition.
The students participate in activities involving four sections,
demonstrating improvement through persistence and achievement.
The time taken on each section differs with each level.
SERVICE - This part of
the award encourages service to individuals and to the community.
SKILL - Students will
discover and develop practical and social skills and personal
interests, by learning a new skill or improving an existing
one.
PHYSICAL RECREATION
- Students will participate in and improve in a physical
activity of their choice.
EXPEDITION - Students will prepare for and participate
in two weekends: one practice and one assessed expedition.
Bronze students will complete a 15 mile hike over 2 days,
Silver participants will complete a 30 mile hike, both carrying
their tent(s), clothes, food etc.
The expeditions are HARD, but give a
real sense of achievement. BE WARNED, however - it ALWAYS
rains!!!!
