Duke of Edinburgh's Award

As part of the extra curricular timetable, at Nonsuch we offer the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme to all pupils.

The Bronze Award is offered to thirty students in Year 9. The award involves a programme of activities undertaken during free or personal time.

Students will:

Learn to appreciate the needs of the community.
Learn a new skill or improve an existing one.
Undertake more physical activity.
Prepare for and particiapte in a 2 / 3 day expedition.

The students participate in activities involving four sections, demonstrating improvement through persistence and achievement. The time taken on each section differs with each level.

SERVICE - This part of the award encourages service to individuals and to the community.

SKILL - Students will discover and develop practical and social skills and personal interests, by learning a new skill or improving an existing one.

PHYSICAL RECREATION - Students will participate in and improve in a physical activity of their choice.

EXPEDITION
- Students will prepare for and participate in two weekends: one practice and one assessed expedition. Bronze students will complete a 15 mile hike over 2 days, Silver participants will complete a 30 mile hike, both carrying their tent(s), clothes, food etc.

The expeditions are HARD, but give a real sense of achievement. BE WARNED, however - it ALWAYS rains!!!!
