The Curriculum at Nonsuch

Key Stage 3

The National Curriculum is followed, augmented by additional opportunities. In Y7 all subjects are taught in mixed ability form groups, except for practical lessons where numbers are reduced. There is some setting by ability in Mathematics and Science in Years 8 and 9. Religious Studies lessons follow the Sutton scheme of work and are multi-faith. Students study two languages (French, German, Spanish or Latin). Technology incorporates food, resistant materials and textiles whilst ICT is taught in separate lessons as well as being used across the curriculum. Activities available in Physical Education include athletics, dance, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rounders, volleyball, tennis and swimming. Pupils benefit from a programme of tutorial work organised by the Head of Year and taught in form groups by the tutors with external speakers. This includes: Citizenship, Careers, Health and Relationship Education. A full programme of options guidance is provided for Y9 prior to their selection of GCSE courses and they are encouraged to attend the Annual Careers Convention.

Key Stage 4

Pupils take a core curriculum of eight GCSEs in English, English Literature, a modern foreign language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with half course GCSEs in Religious Studies and ICT. Three additional choices are made from a wide range of full and half courses. Design Technology may be taken as a full or half course. A programme of tutorial work includes Citizenship, Careers, Health and Relationship Education. Work related learning is integrated into the Key Stage 4 curriculum and students are encouraged to seek the advice of the attached careers adviser. A full programme of information about Post-16 options is provided and all Year 11 students have an individual guidance meeting with a member of the leadership team.

Sixth Form

Students benefit from belonging to a large academic community where AS and AL subject options are extensive. Currently 23 subjects are offered as well as a programme of tutorial work, a Seminar lecture series and Critical Thinking lessons which lead to an additional qualification. Sports Leadership courses are popular and there are many opportunities for students to take responsibility within the whole school. Guidance for application to Higher Education is given by highly experienced staff and includes specific Medical, Veterinary, Legal and Oxbridge preparation as well as assistance for those applying for employment based training.

At all levels examination success is outstanding as able students work with committed staff in excellent, purpose-built accommodation. The programme of extra-curricular activities is exceptionally large and varied.
