Design & Technology Department Website

The Design and Technology department at Nonsuch is staffed by a team of four experienced and enthusiastic specialists, led by Head of Department Mrs Gell. The department is housed in a suite of three large, bright, purpose-built rooms. The department also benefits from a technician who helps with preparation in all areas.

The department comprises three areas, Resistant Materials & Graphics, Textiles and Food Technology. At KS3 pupils are given an opportunity to experience all areas of the D&T curriculum in group sizes of no more than twenty. In Years 7 and 8 pupils rotate around the three areas of the department each year and have a triple period each week. In Year 9 they opt for two disciplines, spending half a year on each and have two periods a week. Homework is set on a regular basis.

At KS4, Design & Technology is a popular subject. Currently the department offers full and short courses in Graphic Products, Food Technology and Textiles Technology.

At KS5 the department offers Product Design, which can be taken using one of two routes, 3D Design or Textiles. The A level course is now in its fifth year and numbers have grown rapidly.

The department is developing a range of software and hardware facilities, which pupils at all levels are encouraged to use.

A range of activities are organised outside lessons to ensure pupils receive the broadest D&T experience possible. We also offer lunchtimes and after school practical workshops. At KS4 and KS5 students are encouraged to make maximum use of external sources i.e. museums, libraries and exhibitions.
