Key Stage 3 Design and Technology courses have the following
objectives in common
Pupils should demonstrate:

Year 7
The Year 7 courses introduce pupils to the processes of designing
and making quality products using a range of materials.
Food Technology enables pupils to study various topics including
food safety, nutrition and food choices, staple/cereal foods
and tasting and testing.
The Resistant Materials course gives pupils the opportunity
to design and make an electronic Steady Hand Game. The project
ensures that the pupils learn how to use a vacuum former and
make a simple electronic circuit as well as introducing them
to a range of basic machinery and tools.
The project undertaken in Textiles provides opportunities
for the study of ethnic pattern, fibres, yarns and fabrics
whilst developing batik and sewing machine skills.
Year
8
The Food technology course will enable pupils to study various
topics in food safety and hygiene, tasting and testing, recipe
adaptation, enabling them to develop their practical skills.
The Resistant Materials course will focus on designing and
making a wind chime* using a variety of materials whilst developing
manipulative skills and graphic presentation.
In Textiles, pupils will make a study of textile structures
enabling them to broaden their manipulative skills and understanding
of a range of textile materials.
*This
is a new project for 2005/06
Year
9
In Food Technology the pupils experience mass production techniques.
They also continue to develop their recipe adaptation and
evaluation skills.
In Resistant Materials the pupils design and make a mechanical
clock. This entails using a broad range of materials and equipment.
The Textiles course focuses upon a beachwear and accessories
brief, which introduces the pupils to a range of decorative
techniques and industrial perspectives.
