  THE CLASSICS DEPARTMENT

Classics at Nonsuch is very strong and thriving, thanks to the enthusiasm and excellent leadership of a Head of Department who is wholly committed to raising the profile of her subject. The Classics team have created a unique and popular department, with high numbers of pupils taking up the opportunity to study Latin and Ancient Greek.

At KS3, Latin has parity with the modern languages French, German and Spanish and there are 2 classes of Latin in years 7, 8 and 9. All students study within their form groups until year 10 when they make their choices for GCSE.

At KS4 this year there are 2 GCSE Latin groups. Students in year 10 are offered an opportunity to study Ancient Greek ab initio. The academic rigour and increasing popularity of Latin and Greek are strengths of the Modern Languages and Classics department. Results are consistently outstanding at GCSE, AS and A2 in both Latin and Greek.

There are many additional activities offered to students including the following:
  • Year 8: Trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace
  • Years 8+9: Latin Reading Competition
  • Year 9: Trip to Rome in 2009
  • Years 9+10: Participation in Annual Classics Quiz at old Palace School, Croydon.
  • Years 10: Trip to the Roman Baths in Bath
  • Years 10, 11, 12 and 13: Greek students annual visit to see the Greek play at Kings College
    Theatre, London.
  • Years 10-13: Residential trip to Italy or Greece (every second year)
