The Economics Department
Autumn Term 2010
The Economics Department has had an exciting half term. We
have three groups of Year 12 students running Young Enterprise companies.
They have been very active in their fundraising and extremely enterprising,
selling everything from friendship bracelets to doughnuts, with one group
even organising a dinner in a London restaurant.
Enterprise Week
The week beginning November 15 was Enterprise Week and kicked off with
the Young Enterprise company Quantum. giving assemblies to the Lower
School. On Wednesday six Year 10 students took part in the Sutton and
Merton Enterprise Challenge. The challenge was Liquids mean life.
and the students had to come up with ideas for a new fruit-based organic
drink which they took from conception to market. On Friday Year 10 enjoyed
The Stock Market Challenge.. In small groups they were given a virtual
fortune of £100,000, which they used to buy shares in a variety
of companies. Despite setbacks in the form of adverse trading conditions,
most groups managed to turn a profit with the leading two teams having
profits and portfolios worth over £220,000.
Target 2.0 Challenge
On 23 November four Year 13 A Level Economics students took part in the
Bank of England Target 2.0 Challenge. The challenge gives teams of students
aged 16-18 the chance to take on the role of the Bank of England's Monetary
Policy Committee, and tell panels of judges what monetary policy they
would set to achieve the Government's inflation target. The team had spent
weeks researching and preparing and gave an excellent account of themselves.
The presentation was slick and the girls held up well to the rigorous
questioning from the panel; they were commended for their thorough research
and came away having learnt a great deal about team
