The
Physical Education Department is thriving and enthusiastic and committed
to giving students the opportunity to improve and excel in a range of
physical activities.
There are currently six members in the department: three full time, one
part time and two staff who teach in other areas of the school. In addition
three staff are employed to help with extra-curricular activities involving
netball, hockey and judo.
The PE Department has recently benefited from the building on site of
a David Lloyd complex, which has been designed to attach to the current
school building; the school has a separate section of the complex for
its use. The department has sole use of a 4-badminton-court sized sports
hall, morning use of the indoor swimming pool (25 metres and 6 lanes)
and afternoon use of David Lloyd outdoor tennis courts. There is an office,
a large classroom, a generously sized resources area and in addition,
one wet and two dry changing rooms for the sole use of Nonsuch pupils.
Outdoor facilities at Nonsuch are also extensive consisting of netball
/ tennis courts, playing fields / 400m grass athletics track (currently
being levelled) and an excellent floodlit synthetic turf pitch.
The PE department offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities in
both the winter and summer seasons to include: activities club, athletics,
badminton, dance, cheerleading, cross-country, gymnastics, hockey, judo,
netball, table tennis, tennis, rounders and volleyball. We enter a variety
of tournaments and competitions at Borough and County level (including
swimming) in which the girls have enjoyed success. As a department, we
support a Sport for All philosophy with the opportunity for pupils to
excel at their chosen sport. (Some students have achieved National recognition.)
All girls regardless of ability are able to attend extra-curricular activities.
In addition all pupils represent their House in at least one match in
each sport during the Inter-House competitions that take place during
the year.
We are extremely pleased that Nonsuch pupils in year 9 and 10 have the
opportunity to ball girl at the prestigious Stella Artois Tennis Tournament
at Queens Club. The girls are trained by the P.E. staff (who are responsible
for the ballgirling at the tournament) throughout the year and the successful
students are selected in May. It is a valuable experience for the girls
and one which they never forget.
The curriculum includes games, dance, gymnastics, athletics and swimming.
Health and Fitness is a valuable part of the National Curriculum and it
is taught as a separate unit as well as throughout the other activities.
Pupils are encouraged to learn about the importance of health and fitness,
hopefully leaving Nonsuch with the skills and enthusiasm to continue with
an active and healthy lifestyle.
The Physical Education Department has high expectations of its pupils.
We teach Physical Education at GCSE, AS and A2 level standard and have
had enthusiastic and consistent commitment to the subject from students.
GCSE results for Physical Education are excellent. The 2003/2004 class
achieved 100% A-B grades. 85% of AS and A2 students achieved at least
a grade B (100% A-C) in 2004. Year 12 students also have the opportunity
to take the Sports Leader UK (formally British Sports Trust) Sports Leader
Award. The students gain enormous benefits from participation in this
course and working with students from younger year groups.
Nonsuch High School's PE department has been awarded the Sports Mark for
commitment to sport, of which we are very proud. Improvements to our practice
in all activities are always being sought.
