What can you do with Music?


Many former Nonsuch students have gone into the music profession following degree courses at universities or conservatoires.

Performers

Look out for

Lucy Wakeford, harp (RCM)

….one of the most outstanding harpists of her generation..

Lucy was appointed principal harp in the Philharmonia in 2002 and often appears as a soloist.

Lisanne Melchior, viola (RNCM)

Began her professional playing with Illinois Chamber Orchestra. In Germany she was a member of the West Falische Kammer Philharmonie. Now based in Gloucestershire, she plays with the English String Orchestra.

Monica McCarron, Flute (GSMD)

Freelances with all the top symphony orchestras (LPO,RPO,BBC SO, LSO etc. as well as playing in the opera houses and theatres (The Woman in White, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera etc) and film scores (The Lord of the Rings)

Others have their talents spotted at an earlier age.

Katie Melua was signed up as a singer/song writer after she left Nonsuch and was studying at the Brit School.
She says 'I always get a warm feeling when I see someone holding a guitar case or a violin case on the street,- it's like I know I'd get on well with that person and I always smile or say hi.'

Teachers

Numerous Nonsuch students now run their own Music Departments in secondary schools following a university Music Degree and PGCE.
Local secondary Music teachers include Katy Ash, Clare Barrett and Eleanor Eggington.
Junior School teachers with responsibility for Music include Davina Giarraputo and Lauren Harsh.

Nadine Andre is Head of Piano at Dunnotter School. Clare Caddick runs the Emerald Music School, Kyria Evans teaches violin for Surrey County Arts and Tista Banerje teaches Karnatic violin.

Musical Directing / conducting

Clare Caddick runs the Osiris Ensemble Choir and has been Musical Director of Wimbledon Light Opera Society for several years.

Orchestral Management

Julie Hall worked in orchestral management for several years and also as the concert manager for St David's Hall, Wales.

Music Therapy

This can be studied as a postgraduate course after a music degree.
Mary Langmaid works as a music therapist.

Recording Industry

Nerys Richards studied on the Tonmeister Course at the University of Surrey - a mixture of Music and Physics. She now works as a sound engineer. Many students follow a course like this with a career in the BBC, recording studios, or other media jobs.

Arts Administration

Rebecca Herbert works for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music
