Music The Sixth Form


For A-Level we follow the Edexcel specification. Pupils achieved excellent results across AS and A2 in 2007 with seven out of nine pupils achieving an A grade. The Edexcel music A-Level course is assessed through the following means and topics:

Component Requirements  
Unit 1: Performance Perform one or more solo or ensemble pieces lasting 5-6 minutes. 30% of AS (15 % of A-Level)

Internally assessed

Unit 2: Composition A three-minute composition, the brief of which will be chosen from one of four that the exam board have set. Written sleeve notes (an evaluation) accompanies the composition. 30 % of AS (15 % of A-Level)

Externally assessed

Unit 3: Developing Musical Understanding Section A: Listening paper.

Section B: Investigating musical styles - respond to structured questions using set works from instrumental and vocal music topics.
Section C: Understanding chords and lines - score analysis and four-part harmony task.

40% of AS (20% of A-Level)

Externally assessed
Unit 4: Extended Performance

Perform solo or ensemble pieces amounting to 12-15 minutes' worth of repertoire.



30% of A2 (15% of A-Level)

Internally assessed

Unit 5: Compositions and Technical Study Choice of 1 composition and 1 technical study (such as Bach chorale) OR 2 compositions OR 2 technical studies. 30% of A2 (15% of A-Level)

Externally assessed

Unit 6: Further Musical Understanding Section A: Aural Analysis (Listening)

Section B: Music in context - respond to structured questions using set works from the applied music topic.

Section C: Continuity and change in instrumental music.

40% of A2 (20% of AS)
