Music The Sixth Form


For A-Level we follow the Edexcel specification. Pupils achieved excellent results across AS and A2 in 2007 with seven out of nine pupils achieving an A grade. The Edexcel music A-Level course is assessed through the following means and topics:

Component Requirements  
Unit 1: Performing Perform one or more solo pieces lasting 5-6 minutes.


Performing during the course to include one, solo, one ensemble, one performance of own composition and one other.

Unit 2: Developing Musical Ideas Two compositional techniques exercises (Bach Chorale and Baroque Counterpoint).



One Composition from a list of topics (Theme & Variation; 3 minutes long).

Unit 3: Listening and Understanding Part 1: 45-minute listening paper




Part 2: Respond to structured questions using Anthology (written paper; topics studied are Music for Large Ensemble and Keyboard Music).
